Kevin Murphy Color Bug in Pink

Here are the beauty details (finally!) that I promised you after this outfit post, um...last week. (Sorry it took so long!) Despite the touches of gold in my outfit that day, I was worried the look read an eensy bit drab, so I decided to punch things up with this cool product I had been meaning to test out for some time. It's the Kevin Murphy Color Bug (shown above; sold in salons--find one that carries it here) and it allows you to draw on instant, temporary colored streaks in colors like pink, orange, and purple. How it works: The palm-size Bug is kind of like a pot of super pigmented eyeshadow. You glide it down a section of dry hair and it immediately leaves behind the ultra-bright color. Then, when you brush through, the shade gets toned down quite a bit and you're left with a pretty, muted, watercolor effect that's more Lauren-Conrad subtle, than Lady-Gaga crazy.

A few notes: The color definitely shows up better on lighter hair (so light brown, blond, or highlights)--I have ombre color, so it worked great on my ends and looked really cool. It easily washes out when you wash your hair, though I found that it fades a lot before the next day anyway. (They say it lasts longer if you add hairspray on top--I'll try that next time.) It's a really fun way to experiment with bright colors with zero commitment. I'm hooked. Should I try purple next?

Tell me: If you could have brightly-colored highlights (or even allover color!) for just one day, which shade would you go for?

I adore this! I've heard about the Color Bugs and wanted to try them out for awhile. I have blond hair so I'm thinking Purple but it would definitely be cool to go Lauren Conrad-esque and do several colors and blend them together!

Does it get all over your clothes/face/hands? I love the whole concept of this, but the potential mess factor stops me from being too excited about it.

Keri: When you're applying it, you do kind of get a little pink dust on your shoulders, bathroom sink, etc, but if you put down a towel, you're fine. Once the product was on and I had brushed through, I didn't experience any color-transfer though.

Such a fun way to punch up your hairstyle without the commitment. So wish I was a blonde so the pink would stand out more!

Ooh love this! Thank you! I've been dying to try this, but I'm a little concerned I won't be able to get away with pink (even light pink) streaks in my workplace. But this sounds like the perfect way to try it over the weekend and see what I think! I wonder if you can order this on the internet?

I love this idea! I was going to go black highlights in my blonde hair, but for spring I'd rather do a pastel (one of the few benefits of being unemployed). It is available on several internet sites, just do a search. 25 to 31.00, approximately

Wow I love it! So cool that it's temporary! I would never permanently tint my hair so that product seems perfect to me!
