Would You Paint Your Bedroom Walls This Dark?

As I mentioned recently, I'm in the middle of redecorating my home right now. I'm working with designer Bailey McCarthy and we're currently overhauling the living room, dining room, master bedroom, sitting room, and--just added--our entryway.

Bailey was actually in town this past week, so she came by and we looked at paint samples. We chose the living room color no problem, but I can't quite decide about the bedroom/sitting room. (They're adjoining so they'll be pained the same color.)

Bailey's original design for the room called for black walls, but I couldn't quite wrap my head around that. We then settled on charcoal, but now that the samples are on the walls, I can't decide whether to go that dark (it would be Farrow & Ball's Down Pipe, which is the color in the photo at the top left of this post)--or a softer, more-medium gray (F&B's Plummett).

I mean, I love the way dark charcoal walls look in a bedroom. It's just so cool! But I'm just not sure whether I would get sick of them--or feel like I'm living in a cave. (Plus, am I really cool enough for charcoal walls? Probably not.)

Also here's something to think about: We are doing the curtains--and other accents in the room--in a pink, gray, and white floral fabric that could run the risk of looking a little granny if you're not careful. (And that is NOT what we want!) Charcoal walls would help in that sense--keeping the look more edgy/cool, less grandma.

So the charcoal could be awesome, but it's dark, of course, and it's a major change (our walls are a light sky blue right now), so I'm nervous. The medium gray would certainly be the safer, easier choice. But part of me thinks, if I'm going to do gray walls, shouldn't I just do. gray. walls?

But do I dare? What do you guys think? Could you do dark charcoal walls in your bedroom? Or have you? Talk to me!

I think it looks very cool! Totally depends on the amount of natural light in the room, however.

I would absolutely do this in one room!

It looks really cool but my house doesn't get a lot of natural light. I think I would stick to lighter colors.

I would ABSOLUTELY paint my bedroom walls that rich, charcoal grey. It's stunning.
Paired with a lot of light colored fabrics/accents and some good lighting it would be perfect!

Oh, you dare! I love seeing a dark color in one or two rooms in a house, especially if you have a decorator/designer. It's when people paint small spaces dark and don't know how to compliment it correctly with decor and furniture that it goes bad. When I think of dark paint colors in a room, I think of nighttime, elegance and comfort ... which are also all the things I like associated with a bedroom. Personally, I haven't done a dark color in my bedroom simply because I haven't had a bedroom I thought was spacious enough or had sufficient enough natural lighting to pull it off.

We have one dark purple wall in our bedroom and I love it. I also love the picture of the dark green wall.

A. You are DEFINITELY cool enough to pull off charcoal
B. Personally, I love dark walls, and have had them since I was 14, up until now (Barrel Stove in Living Room and Powder Room). It sounds like you're in good hands with Bailey, and she's told you about lighting...
C. Final answer: DO IT! I can't wait to see what it looks like!
