That Time We Took A Wrecking Ball to Our Own Backyard (Plus, A Giveaway!)

When my daughter recently picked up Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Wrecking Ball, the latest book in the super popular Wimpy Kid series, I was reminded of our most recent home renovation project. As you may remember, last summer, we totally redid our backyard. And as part of that renovation, we built the treehouse you see here for our kids! (Well, we didn't build it--we have no talent in that area--a carpenter did!) All in all, we learned a ton during that backyard home improvement project, namely that...we hate home improvement projects!

I can't help it. Though we love the end result, the whole process definitely had its downsides. First, it started months after the proposed target start date--and then took months to complete. For that reason, my kids couldn't use our backyard (old version or new) at all for literally the entire summer. Then, there was the constant arguing with the contractors (when they randomly wouldn't show up or when they'd say things like "Oh? You didn't want to leave the tree house with just bare, unpainted plywood? Ok, then that's going to cost a lot extra.") And the money! Oh em gee, after our actual house, the entire backyard project was probably the most money we've ever spent at one time--and costs seemed to increase daily with every big and little decision we made. It was a rough time.  

But with all of that said, the expense and the constant headaches were ultimately worth it. We love our backyard! My kids have an awesome tree house--one that I would have killed for when I was a kid--and we have a great place to entertain. (And let me tell you: At every party we have, the adults always want to climb up and check out the treehouse, too!)

And now that my kids have seen a glimpse of what's possible, let's just say, they've got some big renovation dreams of their own these days. My daughter recently told me that she'd like to add a rock wall to her bedroom and a roller coaster to our backyard. (Lol.) Oh, and she wants to redo all of our floors so that they are "the same floors as roller rinks." Yeah, #notgoingtohappen. 

This new installment of Jeff Kinney's Wimpy Kid series (book #14!) tells the story of Greg Heffley and his family's attempts to do some renovations on their own home. They encounter even bigger issues than we did like mold and unwanted critters (!), but it's still a definite reminder that home improvement is never as easy as the TV shows may make it seem. 

My nine- year-old daughter--already a huge fan of the series--loved the book. She just finished her second reading of it and said it is "so funny!" And my six-year-old, early-reader son actually started it himself just the other day! He's going to be thrilled when I let him know that there are actually 13 other books in the series that he can now go back and read. :)

Now, as any mom knows, any book that holds both of my kids' interests, that they can't put down, and that they actually want to read more than once is a bit of a unicorn. You're Going to LOVE This Backyard Makeover

I'm excited to finally show photos of our backyard renovation! This overhaul has been a long time coming--and quite the ordeal. Part of the reason it took us so long to tackle it is that we actually felt guilty even doing it. See, we didn't have a "bad" backyard. We had a pretty awesome one. In fact, when we bought our house five years ago, part of the reason we fell in love with it was the backyard. It was gorgeous! See this photo below taken by the previous owners. (Note: It never looked remotely this good when we lived here!)

But soon after we moved in, we realized it just didn't make sense for our family. Neither my husband nor I are big gardeners (to say the least) and this type of yard requires a lot of upkeep. Without the constant pruning and care, it constantly looked overgrown and "jungle-y" back there. And though the fountain was beautiful, it was huge--bigger than it looks in the photo--so it took up a major portion of the backyard. (We also never used it. We turned it on once. At my son's 1st birthday party--four and half years ago.) It just wasn't functional for us. We really wanted to be able to use our backyard for entertaining and for the kids to be able to play, but the fountain and large planting areas meant that we really couldn't use it for either one of those things. It was the perfect space for people who just wanted to sit outside and quietly enjoy their plants, and that just wasn't us. But it was beautiful. So we let it sit there, neglected, for years. 

But this year, we finally got the nerve to get rid of the fountain and we haven't looked back since. We gutted the entire backyard (well, we didn't--we had a contractor and designer!), and basically created an entirely new space. We laid new brick designed to look old (but not as old as the crumbly existing brick. We had tried to save that, but we were talked out of it. Huge, extra, unexpected expense. Ugh). We stained the fence gray (a little thing that made a huge difference), built an outdoor kitchen and a fire pit, constructed a treehouse (!), and created three separate, distinct entertaining zones: a dining area, an upper lounge area, and a lower lounge space around the fire.

The upper level

Our backyard consists of two levels: The main, upper area, which takes up most of the space, and a smaller, lower area. Up top we did the dining area (we got this Belgian Trestle table and the Provence chairs from Restoration Hardware), a lounge-y area (with the Provence Luxe sofa and these Santa Monica lounge chairs from Restoration Hardware, plus these pillows from RH and this big embroidered one from Serena and Lily). I love how--even though nearly everything ended up being from one retailer--we mixed furniture from different collections, so it didn't feel too matchy-matchy. (BTW, none of this was sponsored. I freaking wish.)

And of course, the kitchen! The kitchen is definitely larger/longer than I had originally imagined, but it has been awesome. It has a grill, my husband's beloved Big Green Egg, a fridge, storage drawers, a built-in trash can (this has been a gamechanger), and a fridge. Plus all of that counter space is awesome for serving at parties. 

And everyone asks about that brick wall/big barn door! No, it is not a garage. (I wish.) Or a guesthouse. (Again, wish.) The brick wall actually isn't even ours. It belongs to our rear neighbors and it is the backside of their turn-of-the-century carriage house! And that barn door is actually a faux door; it doesn't lead to anything or even open! The previous owners of our home had the brilliant idea of having that door made to add interest to the wall. I love it so much and am so glad they did it, because I never would have thought of the idea in a million years. 

Oh and if you're wondering why we don't have any grass back here, here's why: First, upkeep. We got spoiled by the ease of having an all-brick yard with no grass to mow. We live in a city where storage is at a premium and there is literally no place in our home to store a lawn mower. Second, we get no sunlight in our backyard. Zero. So real grass wasn't even an option. We could have done fake grass back there (and we considered it--it actually looks and feels surprisingly real), but at the end of the day, we just preferred the look of the brick. It feels like a little courtyard back there (between our home and our--hee, hee--garage) and I love it. 

The lower patio

We went back and forth over what to do with this lower space. We briefly thought about lining it in faux grass, so it could be a little playspace for the kids, but it's really too tiny for that. (Maybe when they were babies/small toddlers, but that ship has sailed.) At first it seemed crazy to do a second lounge area, but I'm so glad we did. When we had a big party a few months back, it was a great option for more seating. And we have actually used it a ton as a family when we want to make s'mores over the fire.

We also decided to give it a totally different vibe for the furniture, and I'm so glad we did. I like how the blue cushions tie in to the blue pillows above, but that the space just has a totally different look and feel. These chairs (the Mustique Aluminum chairs from Restoration Hardware) were a stretch for me; I'm usually way more classic/traditional with furniture. But now, they might just be my favorite thing in the space: so cool-looking, super deep, and SO comfortable. 

Also, if I could do it again, I probably would have got darker cushions (maybe charcoal?) for the upper level, too. The blue is so much better at hiding stains. The upper level is a light gray (that, really, looks off-white), and I swear, every speck of dirt or fallen leaf leaves a mark on them.

The treehouse

This was kind of decided on a whim. The kids have space to play in our new yard, but it's definitely more focused on being a space for entertaining than on being a place to play soccer or something. We wanted to give the kids some more space to play, so we had been toying with the idea of a treehouse for a long time. We have this huge magnolia tree that sort of had this very defined center with four large branches jutting off from it. We imagined a very simple, open platform, accessible by a little ladder. We explained that to the designer, who basically said, "Yeah, we could do a simple platform and a ladder. Or we could do...THIS!" Once we saw the plans for a true house with a freaking deck, we knew we had to do it. 

So we went for it and then ended up going for the Rolls Royce version where we added the cedar shingles, because we were realizing that a huge plywood box kind of looked like an eyesore. I love how it looks like a little Hamptons house! It's the first thing that every kid who comes over wants to see, it's a definite conversation piece--and my kids had better play in it until they are at least 18.

We love our new backyard, and are so glad we finally pulled the trigger. Unfortunately it didn't get completed until the end of July (and then we were off on this vacation), so the time we had to enjoy it was limited. But get ready for lots of outdoor-space content coming in 2019! The outdoor fridge is already stocked with rosé--and I'm pretty much going to live out there.

Sneak Peek: My Master Bedroom Redesign Plan

As I've mentioned before, I'm in the middle of a redesign of my home. It's going well, but I'm learning that it's a verrrry slooooow processsss. There's back and forth with ideas and feedback, there's interviewing painters and wallpaper guys and curtain makers, there's ordering--and waiting for--furniture. And then, of course, there's the somewhat unique fact that my (awesome!) interior designer lives, oh, 1,600 miles away!

But it's coming along. Slowly, but surely. And I'm loving where we're heading.

I get so many questions about the redesign, so now that we're really making some progress, I wanted to share a peek at the plan for one of the rooms: our master bedroom. I had asked a few weeks back about whether I should go with a medium gray or a charcoal gray on the walls. Almost everyone told me to go dark, which truth be told, was the way I was really leaning anyway.

So, I'm going to be taking the plunge and going with the darker color! The walls will be Farrow & Ball's Down Pipe (that's the shade in the paint can, above) and I'm really excited about it! I think it's the perfect shade to de-grandma and de-girl-ify both the pink rug and the floral fabric that we're using for our curtains and for another surprise touch in the room!. ;) (Side note: Believe me, I do know that fabric seems a little Laura Ashley, but I promise: We're using it in a way that's going to make it cool!)

The white Z Gallerie chests pictured above are going to be our bedside tables. We're still deciding on the actual lighting for the room, but the pictures I included above will give you an idea. We'll have some sort of vintage chandelier over the bed and then black lamps on either side of it. The pink and silver rug is by Madeline Weinrib, one of my longtime favorites.

And the art! Get this: A few months back, I wrote about my love of a Tali Lennox painting (shown above) and how heartbroken I had been to find out that it had sold. Well! Turns out the universe was looking out for me, because maybe a month after I had written that post, the gallery owner contacted me. The person who was supposed to buy the painting had never come through...and it was available!

I don't know if it was some crazy The Secret-type voodoo that brought it to me--or if it was just really, really meant to be mine. But I do know that it is now hanging on the wall of our bedroom. It's the first real, capital A "Art piece" we've ever bought--and I absolutely adore it.

I Have Decorating-Related Performance Anxiety (a.k.a. Why I Hired An Interior Designer)

Okay, here's a confession: We moved into our house a year and a half ago now, and I've yet to do any real decorating. Oh, I've bought things--a bed, a dresser, a completely new living room--but almost every single item has turned out to be wrong. (Couch is too small, coffee table is too big, etc.) And, even more than that, everything feels like a big hodge podge--things that I kind of like, but that don't necessarily go together to form a cohesive, cool room. And perhaps even sadder: There are rooms in my home that are still entirely untouched, because I have no clue what to do.

It feels odd that I've made so many wrong turns (and so many no turns) in this house, because I consider myself to be someone who loves interior design. I can spend hours looking at (and pinning) inspirational photos of beautiful rooms, and I love finding cool furniture, vintage pieces, wallpaper, and home accessories. I spend so much time and money on One King's Lane and have so many ideas, so my home should look amazing, right?

Well, here's the thing I've only recently realized: I am very good at thinking of ways to decorate my home, but I am really bad at actually doing these things. I get paralyzed by all of the options out there, plus I feel burned by my past mistaken purchases, so as a result, I find it nearly impossible to actually pull the trigger on anything. Homes aren't like clothes, after all. If an outfit doesn't work, who cares? You can wear something else the next day. But if a couch or wallpaper or rug doesn't work, it's a pretty expensive mistake--and one that you have to live with every day. For years.

So, yeah. Paralyzed.

Because of my performance anxiety when it comes to home decor, my husband has been wanting to hire an interior designer for years. I've always said no. It felt weird and wrong to have someone come in and completely take over something that is as personal as your home. It also felt like wasted money. I mean, I love home decor and I have all these ideas, so why pay someone to do it, right? Wrong. Now I know that a true pro is going to have better ideas than you--things you wouldn't have thought of in a million years--and they're going to be able to sort through them, and (and this is perhaps the most important part) actually make them happen.

Once I made the decision to hire someone, the next step was to find someone, which is actually way, way easier said than done. I didn't know where to start. I met with a few local people, but no one was really exactly what I wanted, and many were booked for months anyway.

So one day last fall, I was looking at my pins and realized that so many of my favorite rooms were created by one designer, Bailey McCarthy. The photos above are some examples of her work. (So great, right? I just love her use of color and print, and the way that her rooms are gorgeous, but never sterile or overly "designed." They always look lived-in and real and cool.)

I started following her wonderful, and very popular, blog Peppermint Bliss, and became a huge fan, both of her style and of her. For months, I thought about how amazing it would be to have Bailey design our home, but I always pushed that thought out of my head because she lives in Houston...and I do not.

Then, after getting more and more frustrated with what I was finding locally, one day on a whim, I emailed her team to see if she ever did "e-design" for out-of-state clients. Even better, they told me that Bailey and her design assistant Valerie were going to be coming to New York in early 2015, and would be able to work with us! We exchanged a few emails, and just like that, Bailey was my designer.

Well, after a few months of anticipation, this past weekend, Bailey was finally in town! She came by our home with Valerie, and we met. Bailey is lovely in person--I adore her and really feel like we "clicked." After a tour, we sat down in my cluttered dining room. She had brought a stack of pictures for us based on inspiration images I had pinned to a secret board in Pinterest, and my husband and I went through it, commenting on what we did or didn't like about the pictures, so that Bailey could zero in a little better on what we wanted. It was a neat trick and really helped non-design-y people like my husband and I to better express our taste.

So, now it has officially begun! Bailey will be designing four rooms in our home: the living room, the dining room, our master bedroom, and a sitting room off that bedroom. She's now back in Houston, but has already emailed us some ideas and plans for the living room. And she told us to expect a package of fabric samples shortly! 

After a year and a half of dragging my feet on decorating our house, it's finally happening. And fast. I am so excited! I also feel an enormous sense of relief--versus the intense stress I normally feel when I think about making an interior design decision. And that feels awesome.
